Contents page I got inspiration from...

Because my magazine is aimed at a more female audience I decided to look for contents ideas in fashion magazines. This is one I particularly like...

Wednesday 16 February 2011

This is a double page spread in an NME magazine. I like the layout and structure of the two pages. One side is filled with a picture of the artist, making her the most important thing in the article. The writing is very small making it seem more formal and giving more information. This use of USA in the background gives a sense of big thing happening. The story is about how Florence Welsh has been made succsessful in America.

The body language of the photo is powerful. With the way she is sitting on the American flag like she has conquered it. Her harsh black outfit with black high heels, portrays she is feminine but intimidating at the same time. She is looking straight at the camera, giving her a more aggressive, challenging look.

By the way the font is laid out it looks like NME wanted us to think it said 'USA got the love', which may mean that Florence and the Machine is now selling her albumns in America and is an up and coming star in the USA.

Contents research

I chose a contents from an NME magazine for ideas and inspiration for my own magazine. I like this contents page as I think it is original and interesting. I like how NME have highlighted the best stories, reviews, and news. I also like how it looks neat and organised making it look more sophisticated. The thing I like about it best is how they have used more imagery than words which I think makes the contents page more vibrant and interesting.

The pictures range from just pictures of the artists on their own or people performing on stage. This gives a mixed idea of what is in the magazine, is it a gossip magazine just focusing on the artists lives or is it all about the music?

My front cover photo

This is the photo I have decided to choose for my front cover. I think this photo shows attitude and by hiding her eye it adds a sense of mystery making the readers want to read on.

Justifying my mag...

My magazine is going to be distributed by high street, so it is going to be competing against magazines like 'NME'. The only difference with NME magazine is my readership stats will be mostly female readers as I want to promote more female artists. But apart from that I am aiming for the same age group 17-28. The genre of music I am going to be promoting is alternative and folk.

How NME have changed their house style

2009 cover

2010 cover

NME recently have changed their house style. Their old cover looks busy and unorganised which is maybe related to a younger audience whereas their new cover is clean cut and easy to read. The new cover looks more mature and a better quality. The masthead on the 2010 cover related to the photo on the front. Whereas the old cover just has it's standard masthead. Also the old covers have more than one photo, but the new covers only have one photo.

I think they have changed their house style because it brings a new audience who maybe are slightly older with their more simple covers. Making them look more high end.
